Pepare your trailer for spring

In our previous blog post we promised to help to prepare the trailer for spring. We have put together an 8-point checklist from our previous article, a sort of table of contents, to make your job easier.

1. The the condition of the wheels of the trailer

As with cars, it is important to check the condition of the tyres of the trailer regularly. Under no circumstances should the tire be worn, damaged or cracked, as this can be dangerous during traffic. Measure the tyre pressure regularly, as a flat tyre increases the chances of abnormal wear on it and can reduce its life.

2. Brake cable covers and rubber bellow

In the case of braked trailers, it is important to pay attention to the condition of the rubber bellows behind the coupling head and to check the integrity of the break cable covers.

3. Break adjustment

If you have a braked trailer, it is necessary to check the brake settings regularly. Check the settings twice a year. In our 8-point checklist for adjusting trailer brakes blog post we go over in detail how to make the adjustments.

4. Axle

The service life of trailer axles can range from 20,000 kilometres to 200,000 kilometres depending on the condition of the roads and the conditions of use. Remember to check the condition of the trailer axles regularly, as any major repairs and replacements may take a considerable amount of time. By the way, did you know that every third trailer in Europe is manufactured with an Autoflex-KNOTT axle? We offer a wide range of trailer axles. If you need a new trailer axle, use our trailer axle order form.

5. Drawbar and coupling head

Do not forget to service the drawbar of the trailer, as this part also needs to be lubricated every six months. The coupling head is an integral part of the drawbar, but special care must be taken of its maintenance. Lubricate this as well. Also check the condition of the drawbar and tow-ball for wear and tear.

6. Check the electrical connection and lights

In case of trailers the “see and be seen” principle is also particularly important. It is therefore necessary to regularly check the electrical connection between the car and the trailer including the condition and operation of the lights. For example, if the brake lights and the turn signals do not work properly there is a risk of accident. We provide help with the inspection in our To see and TO BE SEEN! Important information about trailer lighting blog post.

7. Practical accessories

Think about the practical accessories you need to make storing your trailer easier and safer as well. Please note our article about our Wheel chock and bracket products and our entry on safety accessories.
