Horse riding, horse transport in the heat

Summer is already in full swing. The long-unprecedented heat and drought are challenging riding enthusiasts as well. Riders need to pay even more attention to the condition of their horse trailer, the circumstances of horse transport and of course their horse as the weather also has a big impact on their pets. Yet, life cannot stop. For example, horse competitions, wild west equestrian programmes and the largest traditional Hungarian equestrian programme will take place soon. Here are some tips to help you.

7+2 heatwave tips for riders

Every rider should know the most important heatwave tips as the heat is not only testing us humans, but also the horses. Do everything you can to prevent the possible onset of heatstroke. If it does happen, start treating it until the vet arrives.

  1. Always have clean water

As with the rider, it is vital that your horse is able to drink fresh, clean water at all times to make up for the increased fluid loss in the heat.

  2. Offer them licking blocks in summer as well.

You can replenish valuable minerals, trace elements and salt in this way as well.

  3. Always be in the shade

Riding is best timed in the morning or late afternoon or evening. Provide a shady place for it to cool down.

  4. Your horse also deserves a refreshing bath

I’m sure you’ve thought about how great it would be to run into a jet of streaming water. Horses really enjoy this as well. Start watering at the hooves and work your way up from there. Horses are cooled most effectively by watering their necks and mouths.

  5. Notice how horses sweat

Horses sweat too, although not as efficiently as humans. The problem occurs when sweating suddenly stops. This is a sign of heat stroke.

  6. Sunburn

Horses can get sunburnt as well. Particular attention should be paid to horses with white patches or large white markings. High sun protection factor sunscreens can also be used.

  7. Recognise the signs of heatstroke in time

If the horse shows excessive flank movements, panting, a prolonged rectal temperature above 39°C, a rapid heartbeat, sudden cessation of sweating, stumbling, strange behaviour or a loss of interest in drinking water, suspect heatstroke and call a vet.

+1. Technical inspection of a horse trailer

Horse trailers are technically not very different from conventional trailers. To ensure safe driving, it’s a good idea to keep checking the condition of major components. For help, see our previous blog article.

+2. Conditions for the transport of horses

It should be remembered that there are special rules for transporting horses as well, which we have described in this blog article.
