What kind of trailer should you purchase?

Has it occurred to you that your life would be easier if you bought a trailer? Are you flirting with the idea of transporting a motorcycle or a quad? Perhaps you would like to buy a horse trailer? Do you want to tow a boat to the water in the summer? Are you a lover of snowmobiles and longing for the mountains with your much loved vehicle? Then you need a good quality trailer. Anyone who is looking to buy a trailer is aware that there is a wide variety in terms of both manufacturers and models. Therefore, the decision is not easy. In our current blog post we try to provide you with a broad picture of the trailers and hopefully help you make a decision.

Do you have special or multiple transporting needs?

If you know the answer then your job has just got easier. If you only want to transport one specific thing then you have to buy a suitable trailer for it, for example a horse trailer, motorcycle trailer, a boat trailer, etc. Conversely, if you want to transport more things, it is worth making a compromise by choosing a trailer that meets most of your transportation needs.

The permissible total weight is a very important question.

Is the weight or the size of the shipment big? Before deciding to buy a trailer, it is worth taking a look at the registration of your car to see how much weight it is allowed to tow. It is also important to know which trailer you are allowed to tow according to your driver’s license.

What type of axle should you choose?

Single axle solution:

Affordable, but when loading, you need to pay more attention to weight distribution than on two axle variants. You have to load the cargo above the axle, in the middle, in order to load the trailer axle optimally.

Tandem axle solution:

If you want to transport a lot of weight then the tandem axle solution is a prefect choice. It tows more evenly, follows the road better and the four braked wheels guarantee your safety. If you happen to get a puncture you can even roll on 3 wheels to the nearest garage or parking area. It is a more expensive solution for sure but it is also much safer.

The issue of the trailer and breaks

Unbraked trailer:

There is less chance of failure than with a braked trailer. Remember that the maximum permissible total weight of and unbraked trailers cannot exceed 750 kg.

Braked trailer:

They are more expensive than their unbraked counterparts but they have more benefits as well. The trailer brakes itself thus shortening the braking distance, moreover, you spare the brakes on your vehicle by using a braked trailer.

Only buy a quality trailer.

It is true that a better quality trailer is expensive, but safety is paramount. Do not skimp on the quality of the materials used, as it pays off during use. You will not have to take you trailer to the garage so often.

Wheel position on the trailer

Trailer with side wheels

Cheaper version. In this setup the platform level is lower and therefore an excellent option for transporting goods with a hight centre of gravity. It is wider than the under wheel version as the wheels are located on the side of the trailer.

Trailer with wheels below the chassis

The wheels are located below the platform, so the platform level is higher than on side wheel trailers. The side walls of this type of trailer can be opened as the wheels are not in the way, making it easier to load. They weigh more as they are made for stronger chassis.
